One of the Christmas traditions we started last year was building gingerbread houses with the kids. Watching the kids splatter uneven icing on to the biscuity roof, and slap-dash-stick candy, in no particular order, on to the sides, also made me realize how OCD I can be. I had to fight the urge to take over proceedings… and I may have ‘tweaked’ (*read re-done*) a few things in the name of aesthetically pleasing home display.
Sorry kids. That wasn’t fair. This year, I am vowing to be completely hands off. I’ll get my own house to play with, and the kids will have the creative freedom to slap-dash as they wish. I’m sure Harry will just slam the gingerbread door anyway, or throw it across the room at some point, hellloooo threenager!
To get some local gingerbread inspiration, we headed to the Omni Resort La Costa, where they are hosting the third annual Gingerbread Festival in their fancy-pants poinsettia filled lobby. Which is just beautiful.
Definitely the most pleasant voting experience of 2016, the kids examined every single house, eyeballing all the different types of candy used for the garden gates, windows etc. They changed favorites around six times before putting their final vote in the ballot box. Maia settled on the ‘The Fairy Tale Christmas’ with Rapunzel:
Harry’s favorite was ‘Santa’s Snowflake Sanctuary’, – that was my favorite too actually, followed by the Ginger Beer House.
It wasn’t a very big display, nor did it fill very much time. But it was something different for a Saturday morning and landed a real good-feel good festive hit. And did I mention it was cost free! A great start to yet another sun drenched, festive filled weekend in North San Diego County. Next stops are the Fallbrook Christmas Parade and Vista WinterFest. More freebies!
The Gingerbread competition is on display in the Omni Resort La Costa lobby until December 30th. Good luck to all the contestants!
